Gas Safety

Are LPG gas heaters safe to use indoors?

LPG gas heaters can be used indoors, but it’s crucial to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Ensure that your room is well-ventilated to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. We recommend using an LPG gas heater only in well-ventilated spaces and never leaving it on unattended. Always ensure that the heater has a built-in safety mechanism like an automatic shut-off in case of a malfunction. All our products undergo strict safety testing and comply with industry standards to ensure they are safe for everyday use. We prioritize customer safety and provide clear instructions and guidelines with each product.

How do I know if my LPG gas heater is operating safely? How do I detect a gas leak?

Regular maintenance and inspection of your LPG gas heater are essential. Check for any gas leaks, damaged hoses, or signs of wear. Make sure the flame is steady and blue. A yellow or orange flame can indicate improper combustion, which may be a sign of a problem. Mix some soap (like sunlight liquid) and water to make a soapy solution. Pressurize the gas appliance by opening the gas valve (whilst it is connected to the gas appliance). Cover all the connections with this soapy solution using a sponge. If there is a leak, bubbles will form. If you notice any unusual smells, sounds, or smoke, turn off the unit immediately and have it inspected by a professional.

Can I use LPG gas heaters in a small, closed room?

If you smell gas, immediately turn off the heater, leave the area, and avoid creating any sparks or flames. Do not use electrical switches or light matches. Ventilate the area by opening windows and doors, then contact your gas supplier or a qualified technician to check for leaks or malfunctions before using the heater again.

How should I store my LPG gas cylinder safely?

Always store LPG cylinders outdoors in a well-ventilated area, away from heat sources or direct sunlight. Keep the cylinder upright and secured to avoid tipping. Never store gas cylinders in basements, enclosed spaces, or near any potential ignition sources. Make sure the valve is tightly closed when not in use.

How do I safely operate my gas barbecue? Is it safe to use LPG gas barbecues on a balcony or patio?

Always check the gas hose for signs of damage or leaks before use. Make sure the control knobs are turned off when you connect the gas cylinder. Open the lid of the barbecue before lighting it to avoid gas buildup. Always use long-handled utensils when cooking to avoid burns. Never leave the barbecue unattended while it is on. Yes, it is safe to use LPG gas barbecues on a balcony or patio, provided there is adequate ventilation and safety precautions are followed. Never use your barbecue indoors or in any enclosed space, as this can pose a serious risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Always ensure the barbecue is on a stable surface, away from flammable materials.

What safety features are there on gas heaters?

Alva gas heaters are LPGSA approved and have all or some of the following features - depending on the model:
• Flame Failure Protection Device (FFPD): If the pilot flame dies, the thermocouple system will cool down. The sensor will close the electromagnetic valve cutting the gas flow off and turning the unit off.
• Positive-off Switch: In older heaters one could only switch the heater off by closing the valve on the cylinder. A positive off switch enables the user to switch the appliance off without having to close the valve on the cylinder (like a stove or BBQ).
• Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS): A safety device that activates the heaters’ monitoring device in case excessive levels of CO² (carbon monoxide), are detected. Continuous burning reduces the levels of oxygen, causing the pilot flame to become unstable and lift off the thermocouple (flame failure protection device) tip. The appliance then turns off automatically long before the situation becomes dangerous.

How do I find the weight and measurements of an item I am interested in?

If the information is not listed on the specific product please email customercare@stingray.co.za with your query.

How long does the gas last if used correctly on an appliance?

Any appliance should have a gas consumption rate printed in the instructions or on the product. This is usually measured in grams. You then convert the capacity of your cylinders to grams (e.g. a 3kg cylinder would be 3000 grams) and divide the cylinders’ capacity into the consumption rate. For example if you are using a heater that uses 280 grams of gas per hour with a 3kg cylinder, the calculation is 3000 divided by 280. This gives you just over 10 and a half hours of usage.

What different type cylinders and regulators are there?

There are two types: Domestic and Industrial types. Domestic cylinders include anything up to 7kg’s (3kg, 5kg or 7kg). They work with an L-shape regulator. The industrial cylinders are all cylinders with a capacity of 9kg’s and over. They require a bull-nose regulator for usage.

What temperature does the Cibo Pizza Oven / Presto Pizza Oven reach?

Can I wash my electric blanket?

Be sure to disconnect the electrical components before washing, and follow the recommended temperature settings for safe washing. Most electric blankets are machine washable, but you should always check the manufacturer’s care instructions before washing. Disconnect the power cord and control unit before washing the blanket. Use a gentle wash cycle and avoid wringing the blanket out. Allow the blanket to air dry completely before plugging it back in.

How long does it take for my electric blanket to heat up?

Electric blankets typically take around 10-15 minutes to reach your desired temperature, depending on the model. For optimal warmth, we recommend setting the blanket to a medium or high heat setting initially and adjusting as needed.

What should I do if my electric blanket stops working?

If your electric blanket is not working properly, check the power supply, and ensure the settings are correct. If the problem persists, consult the troubleshooting section of the user manual or contact our customer support team for assistance.

Can I use an electric blanket if I have a medical condition?

We recommend consulting with your doctor before using an electric blanket if you have any medical conditions, such as diabetes, poor circulation, or a heart condition. Your doctor can advise you on the safest approach.

How do I know if my electric blanket is safe to use? How can I extend the lifespan of my electric blanket?

For safe use, always follow the manufacturer's instructions provided with your electric blanket. Ensure the blanket is plugged into a properly grounded outlet, avoid folding it while in use, and never leave it on unattended for extended periods. Before using your electric blanket, check for any visible damage, such as frayed wires or broken connections. Make sure the plug and cord are intact, and the blanket is not overheating. Always refer to the user manual for correct usage instructions, and ensure that the blanket has been tested for safety by a recognized safety standard. To extend the lifespan of your electric blanket, avoid folding it when in use, clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and store it in a cool, dry place when not in use.
