RECIPE: Yummy fruit, marshmallow and chocolate braai pie

Tiffany Adams

  • 3 - 4 pears or apples
  • 2 TBS honey
  • 70g any brown/dark sugar
  • 30g butter
  • 1 lemon, zested and juiced
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 TBS milk

Cooking Instructions

  1. Slice your pears or apples into small cubes. Keep them in lemon water to prevent them from turning brown.
  1. Fry the fruit in the honey, sugar, butter, lemon juice, lemon rind and vanilla essence until soft and caramelised. It will take about 15–20 minutes. If mixture becomes watery,  drain some water and the fruit should start to caramelise. Cool in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  2. Cut each sheet of pastry in half into rectangles. Spoon your fruit onto one half of each rectangle. Top each one with a marshmallow, some chocolate (some sesame seeds are optional). Fold over the pastry, pinching the edges closed with your fingers or a fork. Beat the egg and milk and brush onto the pies. Sprinkle generously with grated chocolate.
  3. Chill for 20 minutes, then place on a braai grid and on your Alva gas braai, turning often, until puffy and golden brown, which will take about 15–20 minutes. Serve while still warm with the ice cream and chocolate sauce.
